A North Carolina man was arrested Tuesday after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said the man was making several machine guns.

According to the FBI, 72-year-old Earl Carter Jr., known by the alias "AK Guru," was illegally making and selling fully automatic weapons. According to an FBI affidavit, Carter sold more than 1,000 guns from his Hamlet, North Carolina home.

Federal agents said Carter made hundreds of machine guns from deconstructed machine guns, including pins that would convert AK-47s into automatic weapons.

A confidential informant in Wake County tipped off the FBI on Carter's operation, according to an arrest document.

"Carter has sold over 1,000 fully automatic AK-47s to different groups in the area, and that groups in the mountains have purchased multiple fully automatic AK-47s a week from him," The FBI said in the affidavit.

Authorities performed a search of Carter's home on Oct. 2. During the search, Carter told investigators that he knew he was a felon and wasn't allow to possess firearms.

Carter's criminal history includes a state felony conviction for discharging a weapon into occupied property on Feb. 17, 1994.

Authorities charged Carter with conspiracy to manufacture and deal in firearms without a license, possession of a machine gun, aiding and abetting and possession of a firearm by a felon.
